What changed

Sept 27 brought bottom roster shuffling on waivers plus a 3-2 shootout loss to Tampa Bay that closed preseason practice at 2-0-2. No processed move altered cap math or the road heavy regular season path, so confidence holds steady.

Why it matters

40-38-4 and home in April after three straight Finals. Winger Brady Tkachuk was brought to turn all that zone time into goals again.

What to watch

Track opening night availability for center Aleksander Barkov and Markstrom, plus five-on-five save percentage once games count.

What would change our mind

A losing record through the first 15 regular season games, a long absence for Barkov or Markstrom, or sustained five-on-five decline drops this from contender chase to bubble fight.

The counterevidence

246 scored against 274 allowed for minus 28 wasted the tilt, pointing at finish and saves rather than system.
A 46.8 percent faceoff rate leaks possessions for a club built to live in the offensive zone, with damage heaviest on defensive starts and late leads.
Buffalo at 109 plus Tampa Bay and Montreal at 106 finished 22 or more clear, with Detroit eight ahead at 92.
