What the desk said. Dated.
Every call on the record. The words do not change after publication.
Sunday, September 20, 2026First edition · The read holds, with reservations. Confidence 68/100.
What changed
The Sep. 19 read holds. Tonight's preseason opener against Carolina at Amerant Bank Arena and front-office additions led by vice president of hockey operations Josef Boumedienne add camp texture without changing the lineup, cap math or road-heavy path. Early lines are projections, not official combinations. Confidence holds steady.
Why it matters
40-38-4, 84 points, seventh in the Atlantic. Florida Panthers winger Brady Tkachuk joins a club that owned the puck and lost the scoreboard.
What to watch
Track opening-night availability for Barkov and Markstrom, then five-on-five save percentage once the games count.
What would change our mind
A losing record through the first 15 regular-season games, a long absence for Barkov or Markstrom, or a sustained five-on-five decline turns a contender chase into a bubble fight.
The counterevidence
- Florida scored 246 goals and allowed 274 for a minus-28 differential. The territorial edge died at the finish line and in the crease.
- Pro Hockey Rumors reported that Marchand will miss October, while forward Jonah Gadjovich is also sidelined. No full injury report confirms the rest of the roster's health.
- Buffalo finished with 109 points, while Tampa Bay and Montreal had 106. All three were at least 22 points clear of Florida, and Detroit finished eight ahead at 92.
